This was a common school plan in the 1920s. North Carolina has several of this type of school still in existence, most were made of brick like Hurley High was but some were made of stone (Stecoah Valley Arts Center/old Stecoah School). West Canton Elementary School has been closed for many years, though still in good shape, and looks almost exactly like Hurley High School. I also saw a school of very similar design along NC Highway 54 between Chapel Hill and Graham, North Carolina. Hot Springs High School in Hot Springs, North Carolina was of similar design as well. Mitchell County, North Carolina had many similar buildings and some are still used.
This photo provides a trip down memory lane for me...My first grade classroom was the first room on the left as one entered the set of steps on the left. My desk was in the second row, left of the coat closet, both in first grade and later as either a Junior or Senior in High School.
